The long summer break has the great advantage that I finally have a bit more time. Which includes keeping in touch with my fans.
Right now the wheels has stopped spinning in Formula 1, a completely new situation for everyone. The FIA, in agreement with all the teams, has decided on a compulsory 2 week holiday for everyone. All the Formula 1 factories are on holiday. I’m going to take this opportunity to spend 10 days in the sun.
After the last two races I could certainly do with that. We still have no points on the board; and this after coming so close yet again – this time at the Nürburgring. Until the racing incident with Kimi it had been the perfect weekend for me. 7th place in qualifying had the best result both for me and the team to date. And in the race everything had gone to plan. Despite having the heaviest car in the top 10 I had no problems keeping pace with the leading eight after the start. For a time I was in 2nd place, just 1.5 seconds behind the leader, and was aiming for a top eight finish. Until, well until I took the first right turn after my pit stop and Kimi tried to overtake me on the outside. I had seen him and entered the turn with almost half a car's length advantage over him. But Kimi was not holding back. There was no way of escaping, my car with its cold tyres veered out and we made light contact. Unfortunately the front wing was slightly damaged and my race was over, at least in terms of scoring any points. For both of us, Kimi and myself, it was a racing incident. We were fighting for position. Just before my pit stop I had been right behind him.
Looking back, it’s easy to say I should have let him pass and hung on for guaranteed points… Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I drive in Formula 1 to get as far ahead as possible. When my car is working really well, I’m not going to let anyone overtake me and gift them my position without a fight.
The team saw it the same way and told me after the race that I’d done everything right. It’s a shame for everyone, but defending my position was the right thing to do.
In Budapest things did not work out at all. It was my own fault that I damaged the car in the free practice session on the Saturday. My mechanics had to work like crazy to get the car back into qualifying. It wasn’t a serious accident in itself, but it took long enough to fix. I only had enough time to do one proper lap in qualifying; sadly, not enough to gain a good position. The race was no better. The engine was already overheating in the formation lap and after 2 laps of the race I had to retire.
I’m now looking forward to Valencia and of course to Michael Schumacher. It's a great thing for F1, the fans and for all the new drivers who’ve never competed against him. And for Kimi it's a real challenge. No doubt he will be doing everything in his power to avoid being beaten by Michael. I’m really excited to see how he will fare. The interest and anticipation levels are enormous.
Until Valencia,
Yours, Adrian
